Payr sign (orthopedics)

The Payr characters is a diagnostic pain signs in the investigation of the knee joint . If there is damage to the inner meniscus ( meniscus medialis ), pain occurs in the medial joint space.

The symbol is named after the surgeon Erwin Payr (1871–1946).

The lying patient bends ( flexion ) the leg in the knee joint and spreads it out in the hip joint ( abduction ). The outer ankle of the leg to be examined comes to rest above the knee joint of the other leg. The examiner pushes the leg to be examined towards the floor and checks whether there is any pain.
