Herbert Uebermuth

Herbert Uebermuth (born January 18, 1901 in Leipzig ; † January 1, 1986 there ) was a German surgeon and university professor .

Life

As the son of a master hairdresser , Uebermuth attended the Thomas School in Leipzig . After graduating from high school (1920), he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig . With a doctoral thesis on pancreatic cancer with Erwin Payr , he received his doctorate as Dr. med. After three years with Werner Hueck in the Leipzig pathology department , he went to the Charité women's clinic . Although he had become a senior physician and Walter Stoeckel had offered him his habilitation , Uebermuth returned to Leipzig in 1933 as an assistant surgeon in surgery to become a surgeon with his doctoral supervisor Erwin Payr. In 1933 he joined the NSDAP . He was a member of the National Socialist German Medical Association and the National Socialist German Lecturer Association (NSDDB) and was a youth doctor in the Hitler Youth from 1934 to 1937 .

He completed his habilitation in 1936 and became senior physician and head of the clinic's pathological-anatomical laboratory. 1937 became a private lecturer the following year . In 1942 he was called up as a medical officer for the Wehrmacht and awarded the EKII. In 1943, at the instigation of Wilhelm Rieder, he received an extraordinary position .

In 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was released in 1946. After four years as a freelance surgeon, he was appointed director of the Surgical Polyclinic Institute by the University of Leipzig in 1950 to succeed Erich Sonntag . In 1952 she made it to Ernst Heller to professor and clinic director. From 1955 to 1957 he was the medical director of the Leipzig University Hospital and from 1958/59 dean of the medical faculty. From 1953 he was chairman of the Science Union and from 1958 he was a member of the National Council of the National Front .

He initiated the independence of Pediatric Surgery (1958, introduced in 1959 establishing the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Fritz Meissner ) and the Heart and Vascular Surgery (1961). Nevertheless, he stood for the unit of surgery. Many qualified chief physicians emerged from his clinic . Among the ten Ordinaries was Helmut Wolff . 1966 Emeritus , arrogance remained until 1967. Acting director of the clinic . His successor was Werner Kothe . Uebermuth died shortly before his 85th birthday. His grave is in the Südfriedhof in Leipzig.
