Fritz Meissner

Oskar Fritz Meißner (born October 31, 1920 in Naunhof ; † January 16, 2004 in Leipzig ) was a German pediatric surgeon .

Life

From 1939 to 1945 he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig under Herbert Uebermuth, among others . He received his doctorate in 1945 and his habilitation in 1956. In 1959 he became director of the Clinic for Pediatric Surgery in Leipzig. In 1961 he received the first chair for pediatric surgery in Germany. He headed the clinic until his retirement in 1986. In 1964, on his initiative, the Pediatric Surgery Section of the Society for Surgery of the GDR was founded. From this section, the GDR's independent Society for Pediatric Surgery emerged in 1985, and he took over as chairman.

In 1989 he became an honorary member of the German Society for Pediatric Surgery and in 1990 honorary president of this specialist society. He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons . He was also an honorary member of the Saxon Surgeons Association, the Children's Surgical Societies of Hungary and Austria and the Purkyně Society of the Czech Republic.

Fritz Meißner was an honorary senator at the University of Leipzig, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1995 .
