As the son of an instrument maker, Hummel studied medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin , the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München . He passed the state examination in Munich in 1927 and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. Until 1931 he volunteered in internal medicine and pathology.

Then he began the surgical training. After a short time at the Mannheim Municipal Hospital , he switched to Ferdinand Sauerbruch at the Charité . From 1935 to 1938 he was chief physician at the St. Josef Hospital in Schwiebus , Neumark . On January 1, 1939, he returned to Sauerbruch as a private assistant. In 1943 he completed his habilitation. Until April 1946 he was senior physician at Sauerbruch. Appointed professor with teaching post in 1946, he took over as chief physician at the surgical clinic of the Berlin-Tempelhof municipal hospital. With Kurt Strauss and other surgeons, he edited reviews in the German Journal for Surgery . In 1946 he became a professor at Berlin University with a teaching position . He was a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

On August 1, 1946, Hans-Georg Gadamer asked Hummel to act as a substitute for the chair and management of the surgical university clinic in Leipzig. Hummel complied with the request on October 8, 1946. Within a very short time he set up a special ward for tuberculosis sufferers . An appointment committee had to decide on the permanent occupation of the chair. It consisted of Werner Hueck , Ludwig Lendle , Walter von Brunn and Alexander Bittorf . She had doubts about Hummel's medical performance. On February 27, 1947 the dean informed the rector of the University of Leipzig about the negative vote of the commission. Hummel ended his activities in Leipzig on March 31, 1947. In 1948 he became acting director of the first surgical clinic in Ziegelstrasse in East Berlin .
