The University of Shiraz ( Persian دانشگاه شیراز), Formerly known as Pahlavi University is a state university in the city of Shiraz , in the central southern province of Fars in Iran . Founded in 1946 as a junior health college, the institution achieved university status in 1954 under the name Pahlavi University. In 1979 it got its current name. Around 19,000 students are currently enrolled.

The facilities include the Abu Reyhan-e-Birooni Observatory .
