The University of Madras is a state university in Chennai (Madras) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . Together with the University of Mumbai and the University of Calcutta , it is one of the oldest and most renowned universities on the Indian subcontinent . The college is spread over four locations in Chennai: Chepauk , Marina , Guindy and Taramani .

history
The university was founded in 1857 on the model of the University of London . Its nucleus was the Presidency College , founded in 1840 . In 2004 all engineering sciences were transferred to Anna University .
