The Presidency College ( Tamil : மாநிலக் கல்லூரி Mānilak kallūri ) is a college in Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

The Presidency College was built during the British colonial era in 1840 as the first higher education institution in the then Madras Presidency ( Madras Presidency established). The Presidency College was the nucleus of the University of Madras , which was established in 1857. When the university was founded, the Presidency College was attached to it. The Presidency College has been autonomous since 1987.

The Presidency College building is located on the University of Madras campus in the Chepauk neighborhood across from Marina Beach . It was built between 1867 and 1870 in the Indo-Sarrazen colonial style. For the centenary in 1940 it was given a monumental dome.
