The VGS Verlag was founded in 1970 as the "Verlagsgesellschaft Schulfernsehen" with the purpose of publishing accompanying materials for school television. As a result, VGS became well known through the Hobbythek range . The publisher Heinz Gollhardt was involved in developing the topics for the Hobbythek programs. and developed into a provider of accompanying television books. In 1998 the novel “I was a paparazzo” by Christoph Seitz was published by vgs Verlag.

Beverly Hills, 90210, and X-Files novels were among the greatest hits in publishing history in the 1990s.

In 2001 VGS was integrated into the Danish Egmont Group.

For the film D-Day - Decision in Normandy , produced in 2004 by the BBC and ProSieben , a “poor companion book” was brought onto the market, which Die Welt described as “failed”. Scripts for television films from the Lilly Schönauer series ( Lilly Schönauer - Detour into Happiness ) and the telenovela Butterflies in the Belly were brought to market in the style of “ dime novels ”.
