William McTaggart

William McTaggart (born October 25, 1835 in Aros, near Campbeltown , Laggan of Kintyre, Argyllshire, † April 2, 1910 in Broomieknowe, near Edinburgh ) was the leading Scottish landscape painter of his time.

William McTaggart was born in western Scotland to a small farmer. From 1852, thanks to the intercession of the pharmacist Dr. John Buchanan the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh. As a student, he won various awards. In 1870 he became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy . William McTaggart married his first wife, Mary Holmes, in 1863, who died in 1884 at the age of 47. His second wife, Marjory Henderson, died in 1936 at the age of 80. William McTaggart is buried in Newington Churchyard in Edinburgh. William McTaggart should not be confused with his grandson Sir William MacTaggart (1903–1981).

William McTaggarts first painted naturalistic genre pictures in small pieces in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites . These early works often depict children. From around 1870 he switched to coastal scenes and seascapes, which, in the sense of the Impressionists, he painted exclusively outdoors. William McTaggart has therefore been referred to as the Scottish Impressionist . His most important works can be assigned to landscape painting , more precisely to open-air painting.
