Halfdan Egedius , also Halfdan Johnsen Egedius , (born May 5, 1877 in Drammen , Buskerud ; † February 2, 1899 ) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator .

Life

Egedius grew up in Christiania . At the age of five he became interested in painting and illustration. From the age of 9, he attended Knud Bergslien's art school from 1886 to 1891 . He then attended the art school in Christiania and, from 1894, the Harriet Backer art school. In the spring of 1896 he was a student with Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen . From the age of 15 he painted the landscape of Telemark .

He was active as a painter until his untimely death at the age of 21. He is best known for his illustrations of the Kongesagaer , a translation of the Heimskringla . Here he was a member of the illustrator group headed by Erik Werenskiold and in which Gerhard Munthe and Christian Krohg were also. Due to his illness, he could not finish his work there and was replaced by his friend Wilhelm Wetlesen .

In the summer of 1898 he fell ill in Telemark. At Christmas he was hospitalized in Christiania, where he died in February 1899. The cause of death was actinomycosis , a bacterial infection that attacked the internal organs. He was buried in the Vestre Aker churchyard. Fifty years after his death, the local government erected a memorial stone.
