Knud Larsen Bergslien (born May 15, 1827 in Voss , † November 27, 1908 in Kristiania ) was a Norwegian painter of national romanticism .

Life

Bergslien grew up on a small farm in Voss. When he was 18, he applied to be a soldier in Bergen . After two years of service in the garrison, thanks to his talent for drawing, he succeeded in starting an art training with the landscape painter Hans Reusch. After two years, with the support of citizens from Bergen, he was able to attend the art academy in Antwerp from 1849 to 1852 . During this time he was also in Paris from 1850 to 1851, where he took lessons from Charles Gleyre . From 1852 to 1854 he was a teacher at the drawing and painting school in Bergen.

He was soon valued as a good portrait painter . From 1855 to 1869 he lived in Düsseldorf . Here he took over the subject of popular life from Adolph Tidemand . For the painters of the Düsseldorf School, ethnographic representations were among the subjects that were particularly popular and deserving of images. At the same time he devoted himself to topics from Norwegian history. A patron had given him the Heimskringla of Snorri Sturluson while he was a student . He advised him to paint the Norwegian heroes. A number of these paintings were bought by German and English collectors.

In 1869 he returned to Norway and lived in Christiania . He got a studio in the Storting building . When the founder of the painting school in Christiania, Johan Fredrik Eckersberg, died in 1870, Bergslien and Morten Müller became head of the school, which was called "Bergsliens Malerskole" after Müller's early departure. For many years Bergslien delivered pictures to the Christiania Art Association for raffle.

After 1869 Bergslien mainly painted portraits, but best known are his history paintings , which are in circulation in countless reproductions. These include Die Birkebeiner (1869), King Sverre in the Snowstorm (1870), The Battle of Hafrsfjord (1872). His picture The Coronation of King Oskar II (1874) earned him the royal order of Wasa .

A whole generation of Norwegian painters went to school with him and was influenced by him, including his nephew Nils Nilsen Bergslien .
