Wilhelm Laurits Wetlesen (born November 25, 1871 in Sandefjord , † June 15, 1925 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator . He was a member of the circle around the painter Erik Werenskiold .

Wetlesen studied in Kristiania and Copenhagen , Denmark . He later studied in 1889, 1890, 1892 and 1894 at Kristian Zahrtmann's art school . Zahrtmann became his mentor and friend, and both went on three study trips to Italy . Wetlesen traveled to Paris with other painters and lived for a long time in Florence and Rome . During this period he mainly painted Danish-inspired interior motifs and pictures of the Florentine landscapes.

1898 emphahl Erik Werenskiold him as a replacement for Halfdan Egedius , who was ill at the Saga Heimskringla of Snorri Sturluson . Wetlesen drew 43 illustrations for the book, even if it is said that they did not hit the “saga atmosphere” as well as the five other illustrators. After 1900 he painted Norwegian landscapes in Telemark , Jæren , southern Norway and Vestfold .

At an early age Wetlesen suffered from a weak heart which, with his artistic modesty and self-criticism, meant that he did not live up to his standards. His mentor, Zahrtmann, was concerned about his reported indolence. Still, he was sociable and the center of his friends and the Norwegian art scene. In 1910 he initiated the artist association Kunstnerforbundet and was its first chairman from 1911 to 1912.
