Volker Kühn on the occasion of being awarded a Star of Satire , 2013

Volker Reinhard Kühn (born November 4, 1933 in Osnabrück ; † September 20, 2015 in Berlin ) was a German author , television and theater director and film producer with a focus on satire and cabaret . He was also the literary administrator for the work of Wolfgang Neuss and a member of the PEN Center Germany . In Germany he was also considered "the great connoisseur and chronicler of cabaret history".

Live and act

After a four-year stay in the United States , Volker Kühn started working as an editor at Hessischer Rundfunk , for which he wrote and produced the satirical monthly balance up to the last frequency for over ten years from 1963 and also worked as a radio play director from 1967, including for the crime series based on historical Role models cases without files . From 1970 he published numerous radio plays and features as a freelance writer and director for various other radio stations. In addition to his work for radio, he was also co-author and director of programs for the Berlin Reich Cabaret , founded by Volker Ludwig , and soon wrote cabaret texts for Lore Lorentz , Wolfgang Neuss , Hanns Dieter Hüsch and Jürgen von Manger .

In 1973 he raised together with Dieter Hildebrandt for the ZDF , the notes from the province launched. Numerous television programs followed, including television documentaries over 100 years of German cabaret, entertainment in the Third Reich and cabaret in the concentration camp, as well as film satires and the portrait of Neuss I laugh tears, howls of joy .

Kühn wrote and staged theater revues and was a songwriter for musicals and feature films. Among other things, his stage version of Marlene , which he developed for the Berlin Renaissance Theater , was invited to guest performances in Switzerland, Austria and Japan and brought it to 533 performances from June 28, 1998 to January 2006.

He produced political satire on records and CDs and published numerous books on cabaret and satire in the 20th century as an author and editor .

He appeared several times as an interview partner and contemporary witness in television and screen documentaries, including in several movies such as B. Have you ever been in love with me? . In 2008, the historically savvy “gray eminence of cabaret” made headlines when Johannes Heesters lost a trial against him and Kühn was still able to claim that Heesters had performed in a concentration camp in 1941.

Awarded several high prizes, in 2013, shortly before his 80th birthday, he was awarded a satire star on the “Walk of Fame des Cabaret” in Mainz and at the end of October 2014 he was made an honorary member of the Kurt Tucholsky Society .

From the late 1960s until his death, Volker Kühn lived primarily in Berlin ; during the 1980s he lived in Schmitten / Taunus for a few years . Kühn was married several times, most recently to the actress Katherina Lange , and the father of four children. He died after a long illness at the age of 81. Kühn found his final resting place in the Berlin forest cemetery in Zehlendorf (grave location 060-266).

The estate of Volker Kühn is in the German Cabaret Archive in Mainz, and there is also an extensive collection of “Volker Kühn” material in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
