life and work

Hachfeld studied animation and set design at the master school for arts and crafts in Berlin from 1956 to 1960 ; In 1959 he completed an assistant stage design at Kom (m) ödchen in Düsseldorf. After a stay in Paris, he worked from 1961 to 1963 as a set designer for the political cabarets Die Servi and the Reich Cabaret in Berlin; the associated children's theater later became the GRIPS theater . He then worked for Ufa-Werbefilm in Düsseldorf - initially as a film draftsman, later as a dramaturge and screenwriter, until he moved back to Berlin in 1966 as a cartoonist for the Spandauer Volksblatt. From 1968 to 1982 Hachfeld was a freelancer for the Berliner Extra-Dienst . In 1977 he also worked as an editor for humor and satire for stern and in 1981 as a cartoonist for the Berlin tabloid Der Abend . The socialist newspaper Neues Deutschland , which has not printed any current political cartoons since then, was one of his clients until 2019.

Trial of Strauss cartoons

Hachfeld had repeatedly published caricatures in the magazine Beton specific depicting the then Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss as a copulating pig. Because of this insult , Hachfeld was sentenced to a fine. He challenged the verdict; the Federal Constitutional Court, however, rejected his constitutional complaint in 1987 and ruled that Hachfeld's caricature violated human dignity and was not covered by artistic freedom .
