Notes from the Province was a cabaret show by Volker Kühn with Dieter Hildebrandt , which was broadcast on ZDF between August 26, 1973 and November 22, 1979 .
After the ensemble of the Münchner Lach- und Schießgesellschaft broke up in 1972, its founding member Dieter Hildebrandt designed the first regular satire program on German television that same year with notes from the provinces . It ran once a month on Sundays at 9 p.m.
Hildebrandt presented his program sitting at his desk in the style of the political magazines of the time. Documentary material from ZDF was often used.
The program had to put up with harsh criticism from the conservative side, as Christian Schwarz-Schilling , at that time media policy spokesman for the CDU , felt that he was presented in 1978 by a previously unsent interview excerpt in a “bad, journalistically unqualified manner”. The service instruction was issued not to use any more documentary material in the broadcast. Two episodes were not broadcast at all: one on abortion in 1975, one on terrorism in 1977 (the year of the German autumn ) .
In 1979 the character of the political magazine was abandoned and the suffix “Magazin” was changed to “Satirische Randbemerkungen” because, according to Hildebrandt, ZDF was of the opinion that “the desk and magazine character could tempt the audience to take the program seriously”.
For 1980, the program director at the time, Dieter Stolte, gave the program a “pause for thought”; it was discontinued after 66 episodes. Hildebrandt then switched to the SFB and produced the windshield wiper there . Stolte was assumed to want to secure his election as ZDF director in 1980 with the decision .
Notes from the Province received the Adolf Grimme Prize with bronze in 1976 . The next regular cabaret show on ZDF came with news from the establishment in 2007. Hildebrandt was a guest of the first, tenth, twentieth and 44th episodes.
