Piirpauke
Piirpauke is a Finnish band that combined elements of folk and jazz in their music from an early age .
history
The band was founded in 1974 by the multi-instrumentalist Sakari Kukko . The name comes from Karelian and means "noise, din". Based on the improvisational attitude in jazz, rock elements were a matter of course for the playing of Piirpauke ; the songs of the group are based on elements from folk music from different countries. This folk jazz is a forerunner of the style known today as world music .
The band had some commercial success with the songs Konevitsan Kirkonkellot , Soi vienosti murheeni soitto , Swedish Reggae and Imala Maika . 20 albums have been released over the years.
Piirpauke toured many countries in Western and Eastern Europe, India, Turkey and countries of the former Soviet Union and performed at well-known Finnish festivals such as Provinssirock , Ruisrock and Pori Jazz . Numerous musicians from other countries and cultures played with the band; for example, Okay Temiz performed with her. In the mid-1990s, Kukko broke up the group, but went on tour again with Piirpauke in 1999 .
