The Devil is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The report produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk was first broadcast on September 14, 1997 on ARD's first program.

action

During a routine patrol in the Munich Olympic shopping center, the young and committed police chief Richard Ertl is shot. His colleague Christian tries to help him and has to promise the dying man to throw away a bottle. He intends to do so, but reconsiders after discovering a bag in the supposed milk bottle that may contain drugs.

Batic and Leitmayr investigate and discover that Ertl did not behave properly and was nowhere near as “a great bull” as his colleagues would like to portray him. You are also quickly surrounded by people from the press who sense a sensational report and immediately refer to the perpetrator as the “Devil of Munich”. They inevitably cause great concern to the population because the killer is still moving around the city undetected.

The bullet with which Ertl was shot is a police caliber. Batic and Leitmayr look at the surveillance tapes in the shopping center, but cannot discover a suspicious person. However, Ertl is obviously talking to someone, from which it can be seen that he must have known his killer.

Meanwhile Christian is getting more and more entangled in the life-threatening machinations that his colleague has started. He's unsure what to do and doesn't dare to talk to anyone. Not even with his department head Rudolf Lehner or his colleague Margret, whom he likes very much. Subconsciously, he is doing the right thing, because his boss is involved in the drug story himself, which he cannot suspect at this point in time. Drug investigator Stein even appears at Lehner's office to inform him that he has not yet found the large amount of drugs that Ertl had.

Batic and Leitmayr noticed that Ertl lived beyond his financial means. Even with his extra job in film, he could not have earned the additional income. Understandably, they did not receive any relevant information about Ertl's source of money from Rudolf Lehner. On the contrary, he finds out about the state of the investigation from Carlo Menzinger and thus learns that there is a possible witness. When he is to be questioned, he behaves conspicuously and is immediately seen by the public as the murderer. However, Batic and Leitmayr know him and know that he is easily confused. When he threatens the officers with a gun, he is shot. However, it is clear to the investigators that their case is not yet resolved.

Carlo Menzinger found out that some time ago Ertl and colleague Stein had seized 10 kg of heroin from the drug search. Meanwhile, Batic and Leitmayr are increasingly coming to the realization that Ertl's colleague Christian knows more than he admits. After he is even suspected by the investigators of being involved in Ertl's machinations, he confides in his boss Lehner. He also reveals to the other person that the rest of the heroin is hidden with Ertl's girlfriend. Under the pretext of wanting to help him, he sends Christian to bring the drug to him. While Christian dutifully does what his superior advises, he notifies Batic and Leitmayr to betray his young colleague. Commonly even more heroin and the murder weapon had been hidden in his apartment, so that everything speaks against him and he is to be arrested under urgent suspicion.

For Batic and Leitmayr, many things point too directly to their young colleagues and on closer inspection there are some clues that do not fit into the picture for them. So Rudolf Lehner comes more and more into the sights of the investigators and they find out that he and Stein have been known for years from the drug search. When they want to find Stein in his apartment, they just come across how Lehner wants to shoot Christian. He had ordered this to stone and after he brutally shot him, he wanted to attribute this murder to Christian as well. Fortunately for him, Batic and Leitmayr appear, who had seen through Lehner's wrong game. They find Christian seriously injured and while they are taking care of him, Lehner runs away. He can be caught and arrested.

Christian had admitted to Lehner that he and Stein and Ertl had increased his meager police salary a little. When the drug was found at the time, they had not delivered everything and were doing their own business together. However, Ertl became too greedy and wanted to blackmail her, so Stein had shot him.
