And behind it is New York is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The contribution produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk under the direction of Friedemann Fromm was first broadcast on December 23, 2001 in the first program of ARD . The Munich investigator duo Batic and Leitmayr are investigating their 30th case.

action

Sixteen-year-old Pit Finke and his parents are looking forward to a future together in the USA. He lives in a socially disadvantaged suburb of Munich, but whether this plan can be put into practice and whether he could catch up with his best friend Dennis is questionable, because Pit's mother Claudia is cheating on her husband Alfons with Martin Reck. Claudia is unsure whether she should leave her husband in order to later move into his house with Martin, for which he has already signed a preliminary contract. Reck and Finke are actually best friends, more disappointed is Finke from his friend when he him red-handed caught. The son Pit is downright angry and threatens Reck to kill him if he should destroy his family and their future plans.

The next day, Dennis Kellerer, a young person who always takes photographs and who later wants to become a police officer, finds the body of the shot police officer Martin Reck. Commissioners Batic and Leitmayr quickly establish a connection between the victim and the finches. During the questioning, they noticed Claudia Finke's dismay and also the dislike that the son Pit Martin Reck harbored. The investigators experience a similar rejection when they try to track down the truth in the Munich suburb. The residents let you feel that you don't belong here and are quite closed.

The commissioners are trying to clarify where Reck wanted to get the money for his planned house purchase from. With the additional earnings from the part-time job at a security company, that would hardly have been possible. Hartmut Grosser, the head of the security company, is not shaken by Reck's death. It is also strange that there have recently been numerous unexplained break-ins in the area where the police officer, who is otherwise considered exemplary, has been reported. The companies concerned were almost exclusively among the objects to be guarded by Reck. Did Reck have something to do with it?

Dennis Kellerer reveals to his friend Pit that he not only found the dead man but also the murder weapon and took it from him. He gives it to Pit and he talks to his father about it. He now comes up with the idea of blackmailing Grosser with the fact that he knew that he would have committed the break-ins together with Reck and, in his opinion, he also killed him. He threateningly shows him the gun that he would hand over to the police if he didn't pay. Shortly afterwards, Grosser is caught by Batic and Leitmayr trying to break into Reck's apartment. The investigators then take another closer look and find the booty from the break-ins in a hiding place. They confront Grosser with their find, but he claims to have nothing to do with the break-ins. But he has to admit that there have often been arguments between him and Reck lately. Still, he wouldn't have killed him.

Batic finds evidence that Pit Finke is targeting the investigators. Meanwhile, he wants to hide with his father, because the two want to evade the pressure of the investigation. Shortly before, Alfons Finke had confessed to his wife that he had fought with Martin Reck and when he pulled his gun, the situation would have escalated. Even during their escape, Finke notices the futility of their actions. His son Pit tries to keep him from giving up and in the scuffle a shot from the pistol goes off. Alfons Finke is hit on the floor and Pit flees with his friend Dennis Kellerer. He hides with his girlfriend, where Batic and Leitmayr quickly find him and arrest him.

Claudia Finke is faced with the ruins of her existence. Both the boyfriend and the husband are shot dead, Pit's older brother is killed in an accident and Pit is taken away by the police.

Reviews

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv says about this film: “The 'crime scene - and behind it is New York' is much more social drama than classic crime thriller. The film is staged in an atmospheric way and Jo Heim's pictures have a long-lasting effect: instead of Christmas joys, winter shows him just a gray sadness, which is underlaid with a wonderful city blues ... "

“The 30th 'Tatort' with the sovereign trio Batic (Miroslav Nemec), Leitmayr (Udo Wachtveitl) and Menzinger (Michael Fitz) is a classic Whodunnit (book: Friedrich Ani, director: Friedemann Fromm), but lives especially from the exact one Drawing of the episode characters. "
