Franz Engel (cabaret artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Engel (born September 16, 1898 in Vienna ; † October 16, 1944 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was an Austrian comedian , emcee , couplet singer and actor .

Live and act

Engel was known both in Vienna and Berlin and played in the most famous variety shows and cabarets in Vienna and Berlin , such as the Simpl , Hölle and Moulin Rouge . He was one of those cabaret greats in Vienna who was forgotten in Austria after the Nazi era . Only a few of his texts and couplets were republished, in contrast to other greats of the period before 1938 such as Armin Berg , Karl Farkas or Fritz Grünbaum , with whom he shared the same fate.

Occasionally, Engel also played in German and Austrian film comedies, such as in Carl Lamac's The False Field Marshal in 1930 and in Otto Preminger's Die Große Liebe in 1931 .

Between 1930 and 1938, Engel discussed a number of records for the Austrian branches of His Master's Voice and Columbia . T. with well-known cabaret colleagues. Today they are valuable testimonies to the cabaret in Vienna during the First Republic.

1933, after the seizure of power of the Nazis in Germany , had angels flee because of his Jewish faith. He returned to Vienna, where he had to flee again in 1938 after the Anschluss . He first came to Paris with other cabaret artists , where in 1939, together with Erwin Saldern and Fred Berger, he became part of the exile cabaret group “Vienne à Paris” formed by Karl Farkas . He then fled further into the Netherlands , where, after the German occupation of the Netherlands in Westerbork transit camp was interned. There he took part in the theater evenings designed by Max Ehrlich . From there the National Socialists deported him to the Theresienstadt ghetto , from where he finally got to the Auschwitz concentration camp and was murdered on October 16, 1944.
