Robert Badger
Robert Dachs (born October 27, 1955 in Weiden ; † October 6, 2015 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian author and exhibition organizer .
Life
Robert Dachs was influenced by his German teacher, the writer Franz Joachim Behnisch , during his school days at the Kepler High School . Although Dachs initially studied education, he then turned his career towards film. He first worked at Bavaria Film in Munich, then for six years as an assistant director to theater director Edwin Zbonek in Vienna. In 1981 his first and only novel Halbseide was published by Arche Verlag in Zurich , set in the 1950s during the Adenauer period. The work was also published in France under the title Bonbons Viennoise .
In Vienna in the 1980s, Robert Dachs met the actor Oskar Werner , with whom he was on friendly terms until his death. Dachs narrated the life of Oskar Werner in three highly acclaimed biographical works: Oskar Werner: Ein Nachklang (1992), Oskar Werner. Genie and Fetzenschädl (1994) and Oskar Werner. Abysses of a Giant (2011). He also wrote biographies about Willi Forst (1996) and Johann Strauss (1999).
Robert Dachs developed a large exhibition on the biography of Johann Strauss, which was shown in London, Bad Ischl and the Vienna State Opera . Before that he had already made a name for himself as an exhibition organizer with the project Sag beim Abschied… (1992). The artistic life in Vienna from the turn of the century to National Socialism and in exile was shown. The exhibition took place in Vienna, Salzburg, Frankfurt, Jerusalem, Berlin and Munich, among others. The book he published under the same title in 1997 with short, concise biographies of exiled artists also received a lot of attention.
Robert Dachs was an integral part of the Viennese cultural scene. On his website he reported on his contacts with Viktor Matejka , Hans Jaray , Bruno Kreisky , Jane Tilden , OW Fischer , Friedrich Gulda , Carlos Kleiber and Leonard Bernstein . Dachs also had an extensive archive on the Austrian theater and music scene and their protagonists in the 20th century.
Robert Dachs was married to Eti Schwerdt, a daughter of the former concentration camp inmate Otto Schwerdt , who worked as a contemporary witness and author against oblivion. His sister Gisela Dachs , who lives in Jerusalem, writes as a journalist for major French and German newspapers.
