Reinhold von Walther

Reinhold von Walther (completely Ernst Richard Heinrich Reinhold Freiherr von Walther ; * December 20, 1866 in Sonneberg , † November 25, 1945 in Sonneberg) was a German chemist and rector of the Bergakademie Freiberg .

Live and act

Reinhold von Walther was born in Sonneberg in 1886 at Untere Marktstrasse 30 in the immediate vicinity of Oskar Dressel, who was one year older . Both were also later connected by their membership in the holiday connection Solmontia to Sonneberg in which he carried the couleur name "Faß". From 1887 to 1893 he studied natural sciences at the universities in Munich, Erlangen and Leipzig. He received his doctorate in 1893 at the University of Leipzig on the subject of "On the condensation of aromatic acid residues with cyanides, inaugural ...".

From 1894 he worked at the Technical University of Dresden and contributed to the invention of the fluorescent tube . In 1896 he received his habilitation as a private lecturer and in 1898 took over an extraordinary professorship for inorganic chemistry in Dresden . At the TH Dresden in 1914 he was also one of the signatories of the declaration of the university professors of the German Reich at the beginning of the war.

After the First World War , he moved from Dresden to the Bergakademie Freiberg in 1918, where he founded the Institute for Organic Chemistry as a professor . The focus of his scientific work in Freiberg was coal chemistry .

On November 13, 1931, von Walther was appointed rector of the Bergakademie Freiberg, and his inaugural address was entitled: “Coal in the mirror of economic development”. He held the rectorate until his retirement in 1933.
