Georg Unland John (* 14. November 1953 in Bocholt ) is a German politician of the CDU . The mechanical engineering company, who previously worked in business and science, was Finance Minister of the Free State of Saxony from 2008 to 2017 .

Life

After attending the Main-Taunus-Gymnasium in Hofheim , Unland studied mechanical engineering at the TH Darmstadt from 1972 and received his doctorate in 1980 with the topic of developing an ultrasonic atomizing device with the help of the construction system . He then took up a job at Wella AG in Darmstadt and then switched to the plant manufacturer Krupp Polysius AG in Neubeckum . From 1990 to 1993 he was Vice President of a subsidiary in Atlanta , USA, on behalf of Krupp Polysius .

In 1993 he was in Freiberg to Professor appointed and director of the Institute of purification machines in the Faculty of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering at the Technical University of Freiberg. In February 2000 he was elected rector there. From 2003 to 2007 he was also chairman of the Saxon state university conference. After his appointment as minister, Unland announced his resignation as rector and appointed the vice rector for education, Michael Schlömann, to act as his temporary deputy.

Since April 1, 2018, he has been working again as a professor at TU Freiberg.

Unland is married and has four children.

In June 2008 Unland was appointed to the Tillich I cabinet as a non-party member . He succeeded the Minister of Finance, Stanislaw Tillich , who was elected Prime Minister . He also belonged to the Tillich II and III cabinets in the same function. From October 1, 2009 until he left the state government in 2017, he was one of Saxony's representatives in the Federal Council .

In January 2010 he joined the CDU.

After Stanislaw Tillich's resignation in October 2017, he announced his withdrawal from state politics.

Unland was the only minister who belonged to the cabinet during Tillich's full tenure as prime minister.
