Johannes Erwin Papperitz (born May 17, 1857 in Dresden , † August 5, 1938 in Bad Kissingen ) was a German mathematician who dealt in particular with function theory and descriptive geometry .

Life

Papperitz was born in Dresden in 1857 as the son of the Dresden landscape painter Gustav Friedrich Papperitz (1813–1861) and his wife Marie Elisabeth (née Conradi). From 1875 to 1882 he studied at the universities of Leipzig and Munich, among others with Felix Klein , with whom he received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1883 . In Leipzig he joined the student union Landsmannschaft Afrania .

In 1886 he completed his habilitation in the field of function theory at the Technical University of Dresden (Polytechnic), where he was appointed associate professor three years later. In a series of works, Papperitz made significant contributions to the solution of a problem from the theory of hypergeometric functions ( Riemann-Papperitz differential equation ) that went back to Carl Friedrich Gauß and Bernhard Riemann .

Papperitz was a founding member of the German Mathematicians Association in 1890 and was also a member of the Leopoldina from 1910 . In 1892 he was appointed full professor for higher mathematics and descriptive geometry at the Bergakademie Freiberg . From 1901 to 1903, 1905 to 1907 and 1923 to 1924 Papperitz was the rector of the university. For his services he was named Oberbergrat and in 1911 secret mountain ridge.

In Freiberg, Papperitz increasingly turned to descriptive geometry. In 1909 he wrote the contribution to " Descriptive Geometry" in the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences , in 1911 he received a patent for his kinodiaphragmatic projection apparatus for the representation of curves and surfaces in space.

Papperitz retired in 1927 , his successor in Freiberg was Friedrich Adolf Willers . He died in Bad Kissingen in 1938 .
