Dietrich Stoyan

Dietrich Kurt Stoyan (born  November 26, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German mathematician .

From 1990 to 2006 he worked as a professor for applied stochastics at the Bergakademie Freiberg and during this time from 1991 to 1997 as the rector of the university.

Stoyan researched in particular in the areas of queuing theory , stochastic geometry and spatial statistics .

Since 2002 he has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Life

Dietrich Stoyan was born in Berlin in 1940 and studied mathematics at the Technical University of Dresden from 1959 to 1964 . He then worked as a research assistant at the German Fuel Institute in Freiberg until 1975 . During this time he gained in 1967 at the Freiberg the Promotion (dissertation A) and eight years later the habilitation (thesis B). From 1976 he worked at the Bergakademie Freiberg as a lecturer and from 1990 to 2006 as a professor for applied stochastics. From 1991 to 1997 he was the rector of the university.

Dietrich Stoyan's research focused on queuing theory , stochastic geometry and spatial statistics . Since his retirement he has dedicated himself to the history of the Bergakademie Freiberg.

He is the brother of the computer scientist Herbert Stoyan and the mathematician Gisbert Stoyan .

Awards

Dietrich Stoyan was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR from June 1990 and has belonged to the Academia Europaea since 1992 , to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences since 2000 and to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2002 . The Technical University of Dresden (2001) and the University of Jyväskylä (2004) awarded him an honorary doctorate . In 1997 he was awarded a university medal by the Bergakademie Freiberg and an honorary senator a year later.
