Oscar Walter Oelsner (* 13. February 1902 in Trier ; † 13. August 1963 in Freiberg ) was a German geologist , mineralogist and deposit watchers .

Live and act

Oelsner's interest in mineralogy, petrography and geology was aroused early on. As a result, he started studying at the Freiberg Mining Academy , where he was intensively involved in mineral deposits and ore microscopic studies, particularly influenced by his teachers Friedrich Schumacher , Friedrich Kolbeck and Rudolf Schreiter . In 1927 he completed his studies with a diploma as a mining engineer and stayed as an assistant at the Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources, where he did his doctorate in 1929 with the ore microscopic work on the knowledge of the gravelly lead ore formation in Freiberg .

He then worked as a mining engineer in the Ore Mountains and later in Anatolia , especially as an expert in Ankara . In 1933 he became a member of the NSDAP . In 1939 he went back to Freiberg, where he worked in the Saxon Oberbergamt . During this time he carried out intensive work on the Erzgebirge deposits. Later he worked for the state government of Saxony, mining department and mainly looked after the state's own fluorspar mines and the western Saxon lignite deposits .

In 1950 Oelsner received a teaching position for special ore deposit science at the Bergakademie Freiberg. In 1952 he completed his habilitation with the thesis The pegmatitic-pneumatolytic deposits of the Ore Mountains with the exception of the contact pneumatolytic deposits and in the same year was appointed professor with a teaching assignment for deposit science and in 1954 professor with full teaching assignment. Finally, in 1959, he was appointed director of the Institute for Mineralogy and Depository Studies. From 1959 to 1961 Oelsner was rector of the Bergakademie Freiberg.

In addition to his teaching activities, Oelsner was also a recognized researcher in the broad field of metallogeny. Terms like the BiCoNi formation go back to him. Methodologically remarkable was his atlas of the most important mineral parageneses in the microscopic image , published in 1961 , which was also translated into other languages. In total, he wrote over 50 scientific publications.

Oscar Walter Oelsner died in 1963 after a long illness and was buried in the Donatsfriedhof in Freiberg.

Honors

Oelsner received numerous honors and recognitions for his work. He was chairman of the Society of German Miners and Metalworkers (1957–1959), honorary member of the Geological Society in the GDR, member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística. In 1957 he was named " Honored Miner of the German Democratic Republic ", in 1962 he received the " Patriotic Order of Merit " in silver and in 1963 the Serge von Bubnoff Medal . In 1965 and 1993/94 colloquia were held in memory of him. A predicted by him Spatgang received by his initials the name OWO-Spat .
