Gerhard Greet
Gerhard Christian Grüß (born March 16, 1902 in Berlin ; † May 20, 1950 in Freiberg ) was a German mathematician and professor at the Bergakademie Freiberg .
Life
Grüß graduated from high school in 1920 and studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Berlin . After two years he switched to mathematics; He passed the main diploma examination in this subject in 1925.
After studying at the University of Göttingen in the winter semester of 1925/26 and working at the German Aviation Research Institute in Berlin-Adlershof , Gerhard Grüß became Rudolf Rothes' research assistant at the Institute for Applied Mathematics at the TH Berlin on May 1, 1926 . In 1927 he received his doctorate in engineering, and in 1929 he completed his habilitation. From 1934 to 1935 he worked at the Technical University of Stuttgart . In November 1935 he moved to the Bergakademie Freiberg. In 1936 he became a full professor for mathematics and descriptive geometry and director of the Mathematical Institute. In 1939, after Franz Kögler's death , Grüß also took over his chair for technical mechanics.
Gerhard Grüß was not a member of the NSDAP for religious and moral reasons. In 1944 he criticized a march of 600 political leaders to "take a pledge to the Führer". After an investigation "because of anti-Nazi party and Jew-friendly attitude" he was banned from lecturing and was drafted into military service. In 1945 he was rehabilitated and was allowed to resume his positions as professor and institute director. From October 1946 to December 1947 he was rector of the Bergakademie.
In 1945 Grüß joined the CDU , he became chairman of the district association and the parliamentary group in the city council. In 1949 he resigned from his party because the political developments in East Germany did not suit him.
Gerhard Grüß died after a serious illness on May 20, 1950 in Freiberg.
