Joachim Karl Herbert Wrana (born February 13, 1909 in Breslau ; † November 8, 1986 in Freiberg ) was a German electrical engineer and professor of electrical engineering .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1929, he studied heavy current engineering at the TH Dresden until 1934 . He then worked until 1938 as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Heavy Current and High Voltage Technology. He received his doctorate in 1939.

From 1938 to 1945 he was a development engineer at Sachsenwerk Niedersedlitz . Until 1947 he worked as a manager in the Soviet design and technological development office in Niedersedlitz.

In March 1947 Joachim Wrana was arrested and sentenced by a Soviet military court to ten years in a labor camp. When the Sachsenwerk was dismantled, he had "saved valuable equipment from being sent to the Far East", which he was accused of sabotage. After two years in the Bautzen correctional facility and one year in Sachsenhausen , he was released from the internment camp in 1950 .

In April 1950 Wrana took over the provisional management of the chair for electrical engineering at the Bergakademie Freiberg . On May 1, 1951, he became professor and director of the Institute for Electrical Engineering.

From 1953 to 1955 he was vice dean , until 1963 dean of the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy. In 1963 he became rector of the Bergakademie Freiberg. He held this office until 1965, after which he headed the electrical engineering department. A university reform in 1968 required the dissolution of the institutes and the establishment of sections. Wrana lost his post as director of the institute, but was newly appointed full professor for electrical engineering in 1969. He retired in 1974 and died in Freiberg in 1986. His grave is on the Donatsfriedhof in Freiberg .
