Neubeckum is a district of the town of Beckum in the Warendorf district with around 10,400 inhabitants.

history

Primeval and early times

Archaeological finds from the middle of the 20th century show that in the early Stone Age , around 3000 to 1800 BC BC people lived in this area. A permanent settlement has been proven around the time of the birth of Christ, when this area belonged to the heartland of the Germanic tribe of the Brukterer . In the 7th century, the region came under Saxon influence and for a short time formed the borderland to the Franks, which soon became dominant . Since around 1000 AD, the cultivated land spread beyond the pure arable land and into the so-called Kämpen and Breden . They formed the forerunners of the resulting park landscape in the Münsterland .

Preliminary settlement

The community of Neubeckum was newly formed on April 1, 1899 at the Beckum stop of the Cologne-Mindener railway by outsourcing from the community of Ennigerloh . Until then, the area formed the Werl peasantry . This was first mentioned probably in the 11th century in the documents of the Freckenhorst women's monastery , but certainly in 1534 as part of the prince-bishop's office in Stromberg . Due to its exposed location directly on the main connecting route between Warendorf and Beckum, the inhabitants of the peasantry were hit extremely hard over the centuries from the Soest feud (1444–1449) to the Napoleonic Wars at the beginning of the 19th century. During the Reformation , Martin Luther's teaching did not gain a foothold as much as that of Calvinism . The Anabaptists had a stronghold in the parish of Ennigerloh. The region has belonged to Prussia since the Congress of Vienna (1815) .

A founding legend of this still relatively young town says that the Beckum farmers were uncomfortable with the sparkling steam horse and that the railway surveyors were therefore faced with some difficulties that led them to avoid northern locations. The actual background is that the new railway line should have avoided the hilly southern border area of ​​the Münsterländer Bucht anyway because of the expected high costs of building a route in this difficult topography.

In World War II

Incorporation

On January 1, 1975, after 75 years, Neubeckum lost its independence and was incorporated into the city of Beckum as part of the regional reform in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Military history in the Cold War

  • May 20, 1976: During the then secret Allied operation "Incoming Red", the airspace in the vicinity of Neubeckum was used as a training area for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the German Air Force for almost two weeks . There the interception of Soviet low-level bombers that had penetrated deep into enemy territory was trained. German F-4 Phantom fighters served as the aggressor and were to be shot down - simulated by Harriers of the RAF from Gütersloh. At the same time there was a major landing of about 300 paratroopers at night. Because it was carried out discreetly, the operation did not attract much public attention.
  • June 14, 1978: After a near collision with the ADAC rescue helicopter Christoph 8, a Buccaneer bomber with the identification XN975 of the RAF crashed into a cornfield at around 2:30 p.m. on a training flight in Hohen Hagen and burned out. The two crew members S. Lt. Adcock and Flt. Lt. Hammond saved himself with the ejection seat.

economy

The local industry consists mainly of a few locksmiths and mechanical engineering companies. The cement plant manufacturer, formerly known as Polysius AG and now part of the ThyssenKrupp Group, is based here. There are also plants of the fiber cement manufacturer Eternit AG and the mechanical engineering company Balcke-Dürr GmbH on site.

The Dyckerhoff II cement plant of the Dyckerhoff AG cement company was finally shut down in 2007.

Since 1925, the parent company of the Pollmann construction group (Westphalia and Saxony), Karl Pollmann GmbH, has been in Neubeckum.

The old Neubeckum station (now Beckum-Neubeckum ), which was renovated for € 6.5 million from 2015 to 2017 , is located on the Hamm – Minden railway line .
