history

St. Laurentius Erwitte and the town church of St. Petri Geseke were the only original parishes between Soest and Paderborn. Tradition from Corvey shows that the place existed in the 9th century. The place was at the intersection of Hellweg and Lipperweg. Several kings and emperors were guests in the royal court there. Henry I in particular stayed there in 935 and issued various documents there. King Heinrich II donated some goods in the area to Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn. Conrad II donated the Curia regis in Erwitte to the diocese of Paderborn in 1027. A chapel belonged to the royal court. This was the oldest church building in the area. The parish rights, however, had the Laurentiuskirche , which is subordinate to the Archbishops of Cologne . Under Archbishop Sigewin von Are this was placed under the patrol monastery in Soest.

In the Middle Ages, the place and the surrounding area were the seat of various important noble families. Among them were the gentlemen von Erwitte . A market already existed in 1027. But Erwitte did not develop into a city in the legal sense in the Middle Ages.

The Cologne archbishops are in 1256 as the owner of the local Goger othing testified for the first time. Erwitte was therefore often controversial between Cologne and Paderborn. In the 17th century, the Landsberg zu Erwitte family managed to unite both the Electorate of Cologne's Drostenamt Erwitte and the hereditary office of the Erwitte-Westerkotten royal court district in one hand. They built the Erwitte Castle. The Droste zu Erwitte family built the Erwitte house .

During the time of the witch hunt around 1630, witch commissioner Heinrich Schultheiss led the witch trials in Erwitte. In 1630 the Westerkötter complained that “unfortunately this inquisition, execution and extermination of the witches was being passed too indulgently”. The hermaphrodite pastor Jodocus Boget was burned at the stake in 1630 for witchcraft .

It was only after the cement industry began to boom in the 1920s that Erwitte was promoted to town in 1936.

During the time of National Socialism , a Reich training castle of the DAF and the NSDAP was housed in the Erwitter Castle . From 1959 to 1970 Erwitte was the location of the anti-aircraft missile battalion 21 (Fla Rak Btl 21) and the battalion's 2nd battery. The units were housed in Erwitte Castle, the local castle. In 1970 the company moved to Echtrop am Möhnesee.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1975, the previous city of Erwitte and the municipalities of Bad Westernkotten, Berenbrock, Böckum, Ebbinghausen, Eikeloh, Horn-Millinghausen, Merklinghausen-Wiggeringhausen, Norddorf, Schallern, Schmerlecke, Seringhausen, Stirpe became, according to Section 46 of the Münster / Hamm Act , Völlinghausen and Weckinghausen merged to form a new community. The community received the name Erwitte and the right to use the designation "city". The Erwitte office was dissolved. The newly formed town of Erwitte became the legal successor.
