Placidus von Droste OSB (* 1641 in Erwitte as Ernst Arnold Dietrich; † June 22, 1700 in Fulda ) comes from the Westphalian nobility of the von Droste zu Erwitte family and was prince abbot of Fulda from 1678 to 1700 .

Life

The parents were Philipp von Droste zu Erwitte and his wife Agnes von Heygen (or Heggen). His nephews Benedikt Wilhelm and Ferdinand Friedrich were canons in the duchy of Münster . Placidus von Droste joined the Fulda Abbey in the autumn of 1665 after studying in Paderborn and was consecrated in Mainz in 1677 . Before his time as abbot, he was provost in the Holzkirchen monastery . On April 18, 1678, Pope Innocent XI confirmed . with a bull the election of Placidus as abbot of Fulda. In the same year, Emperor Leopold confirmed the regalia and privileges of the monastery to Abbot Placidus of Fulda.

During his reign from 1678-1700, Prince Abbot Placidus von Droste had the so-called “Princely Castle”, the district court in Geisa, built. This is reminiscent of the modest coat of arms made of gray sandstone above the entrance portal.

Prince Abbot Placidus von Droste rehabilitated the abbey finances during his tenure as abbot. Immediately after taking office on January 4, 1678, he limited spending on court and state administration. He collected the surplus for the purpose of building a new monastery. After his death, the funds were found. His successor Adalbert von Schleiffras used the property to build the new baroque cathedral in Fulda.

He gave the Füchten house in the Sauerland as a gift to his brother Caspar Dietrich von Droste zu Amecke, who was a royal private councilor and huntsman. Between 1681 and 1685 he had the city palace in Fulda expanded to include the north-western atrium wing. In 1690 he crowned Eleonore of the Palatinate , the third wife of Emperor Leopold I, as Arch Chancellor in Augsburg .

Epitaph in Fulda Cathedral

He is buried in Fulda Cathedral . Its epitaph is on a main pillar of the dome. His actual grave is in the left aisle.

In 1950 the city councils named Fulda, certainly remembering the frugality of Placidus Droste, a little street after him.
