geography

Geographical location

The village of Eikeloh, with currently 517 inhabitants, is located about three kilometers east of Erwitte at the northern foot of the Haarstranges . The lowest point of Eikeloh ( 97.5  m above sea level ) is on the border with Bökenförde , to the south the place rises to 167.5  m above sea level. NN at. The church is located at an altitude of 110  m above sea level. NN . Like Erwitte, Eikeloh is located on the former Hellweg , today's Bundesstraße 1 .

Village structure

Eikeloh is the typical example of an old Hellweg village , in the form of a clustered village in which the houses and courtyards are grouped haphazardly around the chapel in the center. Some of the houses face the street with the eaves, sometimes with the gable side. The seemingly haphazard structure is based on the location of the village above the source horizon , which is why a water supply was only possible with deep wells and the houses were built as close as possible to a common well. The historic town center still has a rural character. To the south, the old village now turns into a planned new housing estate.

Soil condition

Eikeloher Boden is an extremely fertile brown earth that can only be cultivated to a limited extent due to rocky chalk limestone near the surface. The subsoil consists of a hard marl with an increasing proportion of sand towards the top. In the topsoil there is mainly loess with a high lime content. This sediment consists of grains of sand surrounded by clay , which were transported aeolian during the Vistula Ice Age and deposited here. It combines the positive properties of clay, which is water-retaining and rich in nutrients, and sand, which has good water flow and ventilation.

history

Place name

All sources unanimously assume the basic word -loh and an epithet for oak for the place name Eikeloh . The basic word -loh , however, is interpreted differently in connection with the epithet. Schulte Beerbühl assumes the importance of a clearing in the oak forest , while Derks concludes that it is oak forest . After a critical analysis of the existing forms of evidence and previous interpretations, Michael Flöer and Claudia Maria Korsmeier come to the conclusion that the original name of the area for the settlement there was adopted and that the meaning for Eikeloh is Eichenwald . In their deliberation, they are based on the combination of the basic word -loh for forest and the epithet, in Old Saxon ēk and Middle Low German ē i k , ē i ke , for oak . Which, over time, led to the current spelling Eikeloh .

Incorporation

On January 1, 1975, the previously independent municipality of Eikeloh became part of the city of Erwitte as part of the municipal reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Eikeloh
Blazon : "Divided by gold and red, above a green oak branch, below in front a golden baptismal bowl, at the back a four-link golden chain placed obliquely to the left, the top and bottom links open."
Explanation of the coat of arms: In gold and red, the coat of arms symbolizes the historical connection between the town and the Corvey monastery .

The oak branch refers to the origin of the place name. The green of the oak branch was freely chosen. The baptismal bowl represents the patronage of St. John the Baptist over the village chapel. The golden chain with the open links refers to the historical event that an Eikeloher tied the chains with which he was bound in Turkish captivity after his return Feet of the image of the Mother of God in Bökenförde.

Buildings

chapel

Chapel of St. Johannes Baptist in Eikeloh

Today's St. Johannes Baptist Chapel in Eikeloh was built in spring 1924 with the help of all the villagers and was consecrated in June 1925. The architectural style is based on the forms of the baroque. The church organ was purchased in 1941. In January 1942, the three bells of the village chapel were confiscated for war purposes. New bells could not be inaugurated until December 1952. An electric tower clock was installed in May 1947. In 1958, an electrical bell system was put into operation, which enables automatic ringing.

Water tower

The water tower on Rüthener Straße is the smallest in the region with its height of 16 m. It was built and put into operation in 1900/1901. Its facade structure is typical for the region and the time it was built. The tower was necessary to maintain a continuous water pressure in the central water supply that was created at the same time . In 1947 a new water tank was installed in the tower. The Eikeloh water tower has been out of service since 1985.

Waterworks

The waterworks in Eikeloh was built in 1886 by the city of Lippstadt - in the middle of the headwaters of the Gieseler and Pöppelsche rivers  . Seven springs were built into wells, from which the water was pumped into the Lippstadt water tower. After the construction of the water tower in Eikeloh in 1900/1901, the water for the municipality of Eikeloh was fed in at cost price. In 1976, the waterworks was equipped with a chlorine dioxide system for water disinfection. In 1982/1983 two new deep wells and a new pump house were put into operation. In 1988 a nitrate process photometer was installed so that the nitrate content of the water can be monitored. In October 2006, the Eikeloh waterworks had to be taken offline due to PFT pollution. The PFT contamination of the drinking water pumped in Eikeloh was caused by the use of contaminated sewage sludge as fertilizer in agriculture . Only after the installation of an activated carbon filter system, in summer 2008, could it be put back into operation.
