Siamosaurus ("Reptile from Siam") is a genus of spinosaurid dinosaurs that was first described by Buffetaut and Ingavat in 1986 on the basis of teeth with the only species Siamosaurus suteethorni (after Varavudh Suteethorn , a Thai paleontologist). The teeth come from the Upper Jurassic Sao Khua formation near Phu Wiang in the Thai province of Khon Kaen .
features
From Siamosaurus suteethorni only teeth were found that are similar in shape to those of Spinosaurus , which means that they are assigned to the Spinosauridae. In the following years more teeth from layers of the Lower Cretaceous were found in Thailand, but also in Japan.
In 2004, parts of a theropod skeleton were found in the same formation , consisting of several parts of the spine, ribs and part of the metatarsus. These skeletal parts have been described as very similar to those of Baryonyx walkeri and Spinosaurus aegyptiacus and could represent the missing skeleton of Siamosaurus .
Siamosaurus is thus the only species of this taxon from Asia so far , other finds come from Europe, Africa and South America.
Scientific importance
Due to the scarce fossil record, Siamosaurus suteethorni is considered by some scientists to be the noun dubium and the scientific validity of the description is questioned. Accordingly, Siamosaurus was not taken into account in systematic reviews of the Spinosauridae in the past.
