Eric Buffetaut

Éric Buffetaut (* 1950 in Portejoie , Normandy ) is a French paleontologist .

life and work

Buffetaut studied geology and paleontology in Paris, where he received his doctorate on crocodiles from the Cretaceous of Nigeria . In 1976 he went to the CNRS . In 1981 he completed the second doctorate (Doctorat d'Etat, comparable to a habilitation) on the evolution of crocodiles, which was then common in France for a research career. He then turned to dinosaurs, among others, and excavated in southern France (for example in Cruzy ), Spain , Canada , Mali , Tunisia , Pakistan , India , South Korea , China and Thailand .

As Research Director of the CNRS, he heads a group in vertebrate paleontology at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (University of Paris VI).

In the Triassic of Thailand he found the early sauropod Isanosaurus , he described the large pterosaur Hatzegopteryx from the Upper Cretaceous Romania, the large ratite Gargantuavis from the Upper Cretaceous southern France (1998 with Eric Le Loeuf) and Phuwiangosaurus and Siamosaurus from Thailand. He also deals with paleoecology and history of paleontology.

He published several popular science books.
