Amphoe Phu Wiang ( Thai : อำเภอ ภูเวียง ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in the province of Khon Kaen . The province of Khon Kaen is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

Neighboring districts are (from the northeast clockwise): Amphoe Ubolratana , Nong Ruea , Chum Phae , Wiang Kao and Nong Na Kham province Khon Kaen and Amphoe Non Sang of the province of Nong Bua Lamphu Province .

The Ubol-Ratana reservoir is located on the northern and eastern edge of the district .

history

In the late 1970s several were in Northeast Thailand fossils of dinosaurs found. In the early 1990s, a 15 meter long and three meter high dinosaur was first discovered in Thailand in Phu Wiang County, so it was named after the county and in honor of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae . A museum has been set up near the site.

Attractions

• The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum ( พิพิธภัณฑ์ ไดโนเสาร์ ภูเวียง ) - part of the "Phu Wiang Dinosaur Fossil Study and Research Center" with exhibits about the origin of the earth, geology, fossils and of course models of dinosaurs.
• The Phu Wiang National Park ( อุทยานแห่งชาติ ภูเวียง ) - with educational trails for tourists to the places where the Phuwiangosaurus was found .

There are two municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

• Phu Wiang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ภูเวียง ) consists of parts of the Tambon Phu Wiang.
• Nong Kung Thanasan (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง กุ ง ธนสาร ) consists of the entire Tambon Nong Kung Thanasan.
