The Phu Wiang National Park ( Thai : อุทยานแห่งชาติ ภูเวียง , RTGS : uthayan haengchat phu wiang) is a national park in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

The park was officially opened on December 8, 1991 in the Royal Gazette as the 71st national park in Thailand.

geography

The national park is located in the districts ( Amphoe ) Phu Wiang , Si Chomphu , Nong Na Kham and Chum Phae in the province of Khon Kaen . It has an area of 203,125 Rai , which corresponds to about 325 km².

Attractions

The park has numerous waterfalls, including for example:

  • Tat Fa waterfall ( น้ำตก ตาด ฟ้า ) - located in a dense forest in the north of the Phu Wiang Mountains, the water falls vertically from a height of 15 meters.
  • Thap Phaya Suea Waterfall ( น้ำตก ทับ พญา เสือ ) - a 400 meter long waterfall in the south of the Phu Wiang Mountains.

Most visitors will come to see the dinosaur fossils unearthed in Phu Wiang County. The first finds of dinosaur fossils date back to 1976 when a Thai geologist was looking for uranium. Further research led to a total of nine excavation sites. The most important of these is “Site No. 1 Phu Pratu Tima “( หลุม ขุด ค้น ที่ 1 ภู ประตู ตี หมา ). Here the Phuwiangosaurus was discovered, a 15 meter long and 3 meter high herbivore, whose scientific name Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae was given firstly because of the site in Phu Wiang district and secondly in honor of the Thai princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn , who was born in November 1989 shortly after its discovery visited the excavation site.

"Archaeological Site No. 1 Phu Pratu Tima", "No. 2 Tham Chia "( หลุม ขุด ค้น ที่ 2 ถ้ำ เจีย )," No. 3 Huai Pratu Tima "( หลุม ขุด ค้น ที่ 3 ห้วย ประตู ตี หมา ) and" No. 9 Hin Lat Yao “( หลุม ขุด ค้น ที่ 9 หิน ลาดยาว ) are freely accessible to visitors. There is also the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum nearby .
