The Mae Wong National Park ( Thai : อุทยานแห่งชาติ แม่ วงก์ ) is a national park in the provinces ( Changwat ) Kamphaeng Phet and Nakhon Sawan in northern Thailand .
history
Originally, members of the hill tribes of Thailand lived here , including the Hmong , Yao and Karen .
On September 14, 1987, the area was finally declared the 55th national park in the country.
geography
location
The center of Mae Wong National Park is located southwest of the city of Kamphaeng Phet about 350 kilometers north of Bangkok. The area stretches for about 60 kilometers along highway 1117. The national park covers an area of around 894 square kilometers.

topography
The terrain is characterized in the west and north by the Thanon Thongchai (Thai: ถนน ธงชัย ) mountain range , which rises rough and wild up to 1,964 meters (Mokochu - Thai: ยอด เขา โม โก จู ). Of the three drains, the Mae Wong River (Thai: ลำน้ำ แม่ วงก์ ) is the most important.
climate
The climate is tropical - monsoonal , but due to the altitude, the temperatures here are not quite as high as in most other parts of the country.
The rainy season lasts from June to October, followed by the cool season until February. It can get very hot between March and May.
fauna and Flora
The mountains are covered by mixed forest, and evergreen rainforest can be found on the slopes. The most important species are Tectona grandis , Pterocarpus macrocarpus and Xylia kerrii .
Civets and wild tigers live in the forests . More than 450 species of birds can also be observed here.
Attractions
There are some interesting waterfalls on the territory of the national park :
- Namtok Mae Riwa (Thai: น้ำตก แม่ รี วา ) - 21 km from the headquarters, the water falls over five steps into a small swimming lake
- Namtok Mae Gi (Thai: น้ำตก แม่ กี ) - one of the steps of the waterfall falls about 200 meters deep, it is one of the highest waterfalls in Southeast Asia
dam
The construction of a dam ( Mae Wong Dam ) in the east of the national park has been planned since 2012 . This is to hold up 258 million m³ of water from the Mae Wong River.
