The Khao Luang National Park ( Thai : อุทยานแห่งชาติ เขา หลวง ) is a national park in the southern region of Thailand .

The 570 km² park was opened on December 18, 1974 as the ninth national park in Thailand.

location

The park is located in the Nakhon Si Thammarat mountain range in the Nakhon Si Thammarat province , about 30 kilometers west of the provincial capital Nakhon Si Thammarat .

The park is home to the highest mountain in southern Thailand, the 1835 meter high Khao Luang ( ยอด เขา หลวง ), which gave the national park its name.

Flora and fauna

Plant species

There is evergreen rainforest in the valleys and along rivers and in wet locations. Evergreen forest thrives on the hills, and there is also mountain forest. Over 300 species of orchids are found in this area, some of which can only be found in Khao Luang Park.

Animal species

In the park there are a variety of wild animals:

At least 200 species of birds were counted. The park plays a key role in terms of the occurrence of mountain bird species in Thailand.

The 90 mammals that have been sighted include a tiger species, the leopard , the clouded leopard ( Neofelis nebulosa ), the Asian elephant , the little mongoose , the bare-footed weasel , the Banteng , the gaur , Robinson's banded langur and very rarely the black-backed tapir , also called the Malaysian tapir ( Tapirus indicus ).

To 31 reptilian species that have been spotted, include colubrinae ( Sibynophis melanocephalus ) งู หัว ดำ มลายู , Coachwhips ( งู เขียว หัว จิ้งจก , Ahaetulla prasina ) and Asian rats snakes ( Ptyas carinata ) งู สิง หาง ดำ .

Attractions

  • Krung Ching Waterfall ( น้ำตก กรุง ชิง ) - multi- tiered waterfall, which is also shown on the 1000 baht note of Thailand.
  • Karom Waterfall ( น้ำตก กะ โรม ) - 19-tier waterfall and numerous other waterfalls.
  • Kaeo Surakan Cave ( ถ้ำ แก้วสุร กานต์) - popular destination for cave explorers among tourists.
