The Kaeng Krachan National Park ( Thai อุทยานแห่งชาติ แก่ง กระจาน ) is the largest national park in Thailand with an area of ​​2915 square kilometers. It is located in the district ( Amphoe ) Kaeng Krachan ( Thai : อำเภอ แก่ง กระจาน ) of the Phetchaburi province on the border with Myanmar . Phetchaburi Province in the southwestern part of the central region of Thailand . Together with other protected areas, it belongs to the Western Forest Complex . history

The national park was established in 1981 as the 28th national park in the country.

Location and topography

The western border of the park also forms the border with Myanmar, in the east of the Kaeng Krachan lies the Kaeng Krachan dam , which supplies the neighboring population with electricity and water.

The topography is characterized by ranges of hills and mountains that rise up to 1200 meters above sea level.

Flora and fauna

Plant species

The park is dominated by evergreen or deciduous forests that occupy 95% of the area.

Animal species

In addition to viable populations of large animals threatened elsewhere, such as the Asian elephant , collar bear , sun bear , Asian wild dog , saddleback tapir , Banteng , Gaur , leopard , clouded leopard , Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) and the Indochinese tiger ( Panthera tigris corbetti ), there are numerous other mammals including the sambar deer , tenasserim muntjac , kantschil , serau , binturong , pig badger , Malay pangolin and golden jackal . Among the monkeys are found to handed gibbon , Robinsons Banded Surili , Southern Brillenlangur , cynomolgus monkey , northern pig-tailed macaque and stump-tailed macaque .

The park also offers a refuge for numerous rare bird species, such as the woolly necked stork , gray-headed sea eagle ( Icthyophaga ichthyaetus ), red- armored parrot ( Psittinus cyanurus ) and Malayan uhu ( Bubo sumatranus ). Around the Kaeng Krachan Water Reservoir you can find numerous water birds such as the little grebe , osprey , Bacchus heron and several species of kingfisher. In total, the park is home to 58 confirmed species of mammals and 355 species of birds.

In June 2014, Zurich Zoo opened a new elephant park named after the Thai national park. With part of the income, the zoo supports the protection of the elephants in the Kaeng Krachan National Park.
