The seraue ( Capricornis ) are an Asiatic genus of goat-like species .

features

Seraue are stocky, goat-like animals. They reach a head body length of 140 to 180 centimeters, a shoulder height of 85 to 94 centimeters and a tail length of 8 to 16 centimeters. The weight is 50 to 140 kilograms. The dense fur is gray or black on the top and white on the underside, often with a back mane. The hooves are short, the tail slightly bushy. Both sexes have short, slightly curved horns that can be six to ten inches long.

distribution and habitat

Seraue are widespread in eastern and southeastern Asia, their habitat ranges from central and eastern China and eastern India to Sumatra and also includes Japan and Taiwan . Their habitat are mountainous regions up to 2700 meters above sea level.

Way of life

These animals are leisurely but safe climbers who often create beaten tracks. They go in search of food in the early morning and late afternoon, mostly eating grass and leaves. At other times they rest, mostly in caves or under overhanging rocks.

The animals mostly live solitary, but females and young animals sometimes form small groups of up to seven animals.

After a gestation period of around seven months, the female usually gives birth to a single young.

Systematics and naming

Seraue are closely related to the gorals and are sometimes classified in the same genus ( Naemorhedus ). There are seven types:

With the exception of the Japanese and Taiwanese Serau, the other species are combined in some classifications to form one species (“Mainland Serau”).

The name "Serau" comes from a local language in Sikkim . The scientific name Capricornis literally translated actually means ibex - the ibex do not belong to this genus, but to the goats .
