Kamphaeng Phet ( Thai : กำแพงเพชร , pronunciation: [kampʰɛːŋ pʰét] ; formerly Cha Kang Rao ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง ) in the Thai province of Kamphaeng Phet . It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Kamphaeng Phet and the province of Kamphaeng Phet. The Kamphaeng Phet Province is located in the northern region of Thailand .
The city of Kamphaeng Phet has a population of 28,977.
etymology
The name is made up of กำแพง ( Kamphaeng , "wall") and เพชร ( Phet , "diamond"; from Sanskrit वज्र, vájra , the name of the thunderbolt of the god Indra ). This expresses the wish that the walls of the Kamphaeng Phet fortress, which was an outpost on the border with Burma, should be as hard as diamond.
The coat of arms of the city (and the province) accordingly shows part of the historic city wall set with diamonds.

Kamphaeng Phet is located about 360 kilometers northwest of Bangkok on Mae Nam Ping , one of the tributaries of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya . The environment is determined by rich forests and jungle-covered mountain ranges. This is where the teak forests of the north begin , stretching for hundreds of kilometers to Chiang Mai and the border with Laos , although many parts have already been cleared.
Economy and Importance
There are oil and gas deposits nearby , which are used to generate electricity.
history
Kamphaeng Phet was probably founded in the 1360s by King Lü Thai ( พระยา ลือ ไทย , r. 1347-1368) as a southern outpost and at the same time as the southwest buffer zone of the kingdom of Sukhothai and remained an important garrison town for the kings of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya for centuries . Everywhere you can still find places worth seeing from the old days. They are built from the characteristic red laterite bricks.
Since 1991, the one city walls and the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park to the World Heritage of UNESCO .
