Mae Wong Dam

The Mae Wong Dam ( Thai เขื่อน แม่ วงก์ RTGS : Khuean Mae Wong ) is a construction project planned since 2012 in the east of the Mae Wong National Park in the Thai province of Nakhon Sawan . Completion is planned for 2019 [obsolete] .

The client is The Royal Irrigation Department . The kingdom is the payer. The reason is the use of the water for agricultural purposes in the surrounding area for an area of ​​480 km². The dam is supposed to hold up 258 million m³ of water from the river of the same name. A forest area of ​​17.6 km² would be lost or 2.21% of the national park (through flooding).

criticism

The dam would threaten part of the habitat of the last wild tigers in Thailand.

Several thousand opponents organized a protest march from Kamphaeng Phet Province to Bangkok (388 kilometers) in September 2013.
