Amphoe Nam Phong ( Thai อำเภอ น้ำพอง ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) in the northwest of Khon Kaen Province . Khon Kaen is located in the western part of the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

geography

Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise): Amphoe Non Sa-at the Udon Thani province and Amphoe Kranuan , Sam Sung , Mueang Khon Kaen , Ubolratana and Khao Suan Kwang province Khon Kaen .

The place Nam Phong is about 30 kilometers north of the district capital Khon Kaen on the national road 2 ( Friendship Highway Saraburi - Nong Khai ). The administration, however, is located a little further to the east.

history

The district was established on February 10, 1908 under the name Tha Wa ( ท่า หว้า ). In 1909 it was renamed Mam Phong.

economy

A sugar factory and a schnapps distillery that produces Lao Kao are of economic importance . Otherwise, this district is characterized by agriculture , mainly the cultivation of rice and sugar cane , as well as cattle breeding .

Phra That Kham Kaen, Wat Chetiyaphum

In the district is Wat Chetiyaphum with the Phra That Kham Kaen, one of the most revered reliquaries and a symbol of the whole Khon Kaen province.

traffic

In terms of traffic, Nam Phong is directly connected not only by the national road 2 ( Thanon Mittraphap ) but also by the Bangkok - Nong Khai railway line, which has stations in Non Phayom (Tambon Muang Wan), Nam Phong and Huai Siao (Tambon Nam Phong).

Others

The “Royal Thai Air Base Nam Phong” is located on the Nam Phong-Kranuan road . It served as the US Air Force air base during the Vietnam War from 1972–73 and was called the “Rose Garden” at the time.

There are six municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

• Sa-at (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล สะอาด ) consists of the entire tambon Sa-at.
• Nam Phong (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล น้ำพอง ) consists of parts of the Tambon Nam Phong.
• Wang Chai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล วัง ชัย ) consists of parts of the tambon Wang Chai and Nong Kung.
• Lam Nam Phong (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ลำ น้ำพอง ) consists of further parts of the Tambon Nam Phong.
• Kut Nam Sai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล กุด น้ำ ใส ) consists of the entire tambon Kut Nam Sai.
• Muang Wan (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ม่วง หวาน ) consists of parts of the Tambon Muang Wan.
