Amphoe Mueang Khon Kaen ( Thai : อำเภอ เมือง ขอนแก่น ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in the province of Khon Kaen . The province of Khon Kaen is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

Neighboring districts (clockwise from south): the Amphoe Ban Haet , Phra Yuen , Ban Fang , Ubolratana , Nam Phong and Sam Sung of the province of Khon Kaen, and the Amphoe Kosum Phisai and Chiang Yuen of the province of Maha Sarakham .

history

In 1917 the district was renamed from Mueang to Phra Lap ( พระ ลับ ), and in 1937 to Mueang Khon Kaen.
