history

The end of the 19th century was marked by völkisch - in the sense of national - enthusiasm. This led to the founding of many associations which, among other things , set themselves the goal of maintaining the national - liberal idea. In addition to gymnastics and singing clubs, the most important groups were the student associations. The student associations were divided into academic associations, country teams , fraternities , singers' associations and corps .

In the hometowns of high school students and academics, the need also grew more and more to found corporate associations, which were realized in the form of holiday connections. Vacation associations were set up by students to meet for corporate events in their hometown during the semester break .

When and where the first holiday connection originated cannot be determined today. Overall, it is assumed that almost 300 holiday connections have been established over the course of time. The oldest holiday connection still in existence today is the AISARIA holiday bar, based in Neustadt ad Aisch. It was founded in 1883. With over 90 federal brothers, it is still one of the most important holiday connections in the German-speaking area. The same applies to the Academic Holiday Association (AFV) ALGOVIA, which was founded in Kempten / Allgäu in 1893 and has around 230 members, but which has no longer had regular activities since 2010.

The oldest holiday connection still in existence today in Austria is the Ostara Academic Holiday Connection , based in Freistadt . It was founded at Easter 1894.

In addition to the Ostara, there are three more of the old academic holiday connections in Austria : The “Holiday Connection of German Students in Waldmark” in Lower Austria , the “Akad. Holiday connection Lumnichia ”in Gleisdorf , as well as the“ Holiday connection for the German students from Bielitz-Biala Franken ”from the former Austrian Silesia . The Franks were driven from their hometown after the Second World War . Despite the fact that its members are spread all over the world, they meet every year for the foundation festival in Salzburg .

In the course of time, many fraternities , country teams, etc. emerged from holiday connections. The oldest of them is the “Academic Burschenschaft Markomannia Wien” in Passau, founded in 1860 as “Ferialverbindungen Olomucia” in Olomouc .

Due to a change of location or the expansion of the educational system in the city concerned and the associated access to grammar schools or universities , one often had the opportunity to continue active operations during the semester .

Differences between the holiday circle and the holiday connection

Holiday connections, which have emerged from student connections in local philistines , are often so-called holiday circles or holiday circles .

Holiday circles are structured in a similar way to holiday connections, but they differ significantly from the classic holiday connection. The members of a holiday group are also members of a connection at the university location; This means that the holiday group consists of local corps students , fraternities , singers , CVers, etc.

However, holiday connections do not know this admission requirement. Since Ferialverbindungen its members usually already as high school graduates / graduates take, they represent the first contact with the students' lives and must therefore own comprehensive briefing discourage its members. It cannot be foreseen whether the high school graduate will later be active at the university location.

Multi-band carrier

If they want, members of holiday associations can usually also become members of a association at the place of study. The person concerned is free to decide whether he or she opts for a fraternity, a corps or another form of corporation. A “double membership” is only problematic in the rarest of cases, as there is generally no overlap of duties due to the separation “study time - study free time”.

Manifestations

Holiday connections are very diverse in their appearance. On the one hand, they exist at both the university level and the middle school level. On the other hand, there are different focus on values, such as the focus on the interests of the fatherland, political Zionism or the Catholic faith.

  • German-national holiday association Olympia (Oberleutensdorf)
  • Zionist holiday association Zephirah (Boskowitz)

Association of Catholic Holiday Associations

1897 - unknown, newly founded since 2012; Headquarters: Cologne

Holiday connections are much less important in Germany than in Austria today. There are currently a total of eight holiday connections in Germany, six of them in Bavaria and two in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Academia holiday association (founded in 1897) used to exist in Cologne. The initiative to found the Association of Catholic Holiday Associations also came from this. After this advance did not have a great success at the beginning of the 20th century, the association became the KAFV in 2012. Albertia in Cologne and the Catholic Academic Holiday Circle Bonn re-established. The KAFV came in 2014. Laurentia Ahrweiler added.
