Artur Kaps

Artur Kaps (also Artur Kaps-Schönfeld , stage name in Spain Cástor * February 29, 1912 in Vienna , † January 23, 1974 in Barcelona ) was an Austrian theater director and author.

life and work

Kaps made his debut as an actor in a children's role in a performance of William Tell . After studying acting at the Vienna Theater Academy, he switched to working as a director of classical stage plays. In addition, however, he was also active as an author. Kaps wrote, mostly with a co-author, texts on Viennese songs and hits for well-known Viennese interpreters such as Hans Moser and Erich Kunz . The text to Ernst Arnold's Viennese song “When the Lord God wants it uses it garnix” comes from him. Together with Robert Gilbert he wrote “Rudolph Bertram” hits like “Schade, kleine Frau” (T: Rudolph Bertram [these are: Robert Gilbert and Artur Kaps], music by Bruno Uher ) and “Die Semmelblonde Sennerin” (music: Rob . Proud, text: Rudolph Bertram), together with Hans Robinger "Oh Mucki, Mucki oh!" (M: Peter de Rose), but also wrote the words for the Viennese song “Waltz melodies are greetings from Vienna”, the melody of which comes from Anna Maria Chorinsky-Hardegg.

In Vienna in the 1930s, Kaps launched revues in which popular Austrian artists such as B. Hermann Leopoldi appeared with their own couplets. In 1933 he wrote three revues for the “Moulin Rouge” together with Fritz Grünbaum : “Vienna, everything get off”, “Fall in love every day” (music: H. Leopoldi and B. Uher), “We send love” (M: B. Uher and Karl Inwald). In 1934/35 he wrote three revues for the cabaret “ Simpl ”: “We draw respectfully” (M: Robert Schwarz ), “What is pleasing?” (M: B. Uher), “Sit down, children!” (M: Robert Schwarz). His revue “Alles für's Herz”, an equipment revue in 31 pictures with Leo Stoll and Franz Joham, Karré le Baron with Mayon and three Viennese street singers and the Hoch and Deutschmeister regimental band No. 4. - came to Germany in 1938 and was in Berlin performed at the »Scala«. Together with Ernst Arnold, Fritz Löhner-Beda and director Hubert Marischka , Kaps also wrote the screenplay for the feature film “Das Glück lives next door” (A 1939), which in Germany under the alternative title “Drunt 'in the Lobau I kissed a girl “ Was shown. The original score was composed by Fred Raymond .

After the “ Anschluss ” of Austria in 1938 , Kaps toured Europe with the theater company “Die Wiener”, which he founded in 1934 and has directed ever since . In the early 1940s » Los Vieneses « came to Spain, where they performed in the Coliseum in Madrid and in the teatro cómico in Barcelona ; in the latter they performed their revue Todo por el corazón (“Everything for the Heart”) on May 1, 1942 . Here, Kaps and the comedian Franz Joham were joined by the Italian actor Gustavo Re and the artist Herta Frankel , who had previously worked as a dancer at the Vienna State Opera and Italian revues and who was to become Kaps' wife. The four artists decided to stay in Spain for good because of their success, on the one hand, and the political situation on the other, and settled in Barcelona . There they were called Els Vienesos in Catalan . On September 1, 1950, the revue “Alles für's Herz”, directed by Artur Kaps from Barcelona, made another guest appearance in Germany, this time at the Thalia Theater in Hanover.

When television came up in Spain in 1956, Kaps and his troops found a new field of activity in it. Right at the start, Kaps staged colorful entertainment programs composed of funny skits called cuadros , with which he met with approval from the audience; however, they were monitored by the Franco censorship , which did not allow sexual or political allusions to pass. Programs such as Amigos del martes (1961–1964), Fiesta con nosotros (1962), Noche de estrellas (1964–1965), Noches de Europa (1968–1969) and Esta noche con… (1969–1970), by the singer and actress Conchita Bautista were moderated, shaped an entire era in Spanish television history. In addition, Kaps directed the Teatro scala in Barcelona until his death .

His wife, the artist and puppeteer Herta Frankel (* Vienna, March 24, 1913) developed her own puppet cartoons for the children's program on Spanish television in the 1960s, which she made with her production group “Marionetarium”. They ran under the title El pais de la fantasia and were also shown on German television. Here the programs were called "Our friend Violeta" after the main character, a little mouse who lives 'in the land of fantasy'. The character also became the heroine of children's books that came onto the market in Germany in the early 1970s. Herta Frankel wrote the stories in it. Kaps died in Barcelona in 1974. His wife Herta Frankel followed him in 1996. Both are buried on the Cementiri de Montjuïc in Barcelona.
