Cementiri de Montjuïc
The municipal cemetery Cementiri de Montjuïc is located on the southern edge of the Montjuïc mountain of the city of Barcelona . It was built according to plans by the architect Leandro Albareda and inaugurated on March 17, 1883 by Mayor Francesc de Paula Rius i Taulet .
Due to the strong growth of the city, the cemeteries in the districts of Poblenou, Horta, Sants, Sant Gervasi, Les Corts and Sant Andreu had reached their capacity limits, a new building was necessary as part of the extensive urban expansion of the Eixample and was made possible thanks to the support of the city Bourgeoisie . The Cementiri de Montjuïc grew continuously, the originally strictly symmetrical plan was increasingly adapted to the partly rugged terrain, and base structures with recessed grave niches were built in the retaining walls. In 1960 the Cementiri de Montjuïc also reached its limits, and since then the Cementeri de Collserola has been the great municipal cemetery in Barcelona. It lies on the northern edge of the Serra de Collserola .
To the west of the cemetery, the Fossar de la Pedrera memorial has been created in the former quarry , which commemorates the shootings carried out there in the time of Franquism and the fallen in the Spanish Civil War .
