Montserrat Roig i Fransitorra (born June 13, 1946 in Barcelona , † November 10, 1991 ibid) was a Catalan writer and journalist . She has written numerous novels , short stories , reports and articles.

Life

Roig grew up in a middle-class family in Barcelona. Her father, Tomàs Roig i Llop, was a lawyer and writer. In 1968 she finished her philosophy studies at the University of Barcelona and in 1970 she received her PhD . At the age of twenty she married the architect Albert Puigdomènech. After three years the marriage was divorced again. She later had a relationship with Joaquim Sempere i Carreras. She had two children, Roger and Jordi.

Political and social engagement

At a young age, Roig took part in demonstrations against Franquism . During her first years at the university, she was a member of the Universitat Popular UP , the youth organization of the Força Socialista Federal (FSF). After the dissolution of the FSF, Roig joined the communist party PSUC . She took part in various actions against the Francoist dictatorship.

In 1976 Roig became part of the board of directors of the Ateneu Barcelonès cultural institution .

Literary career

She worked as a lecturer at Bristol University between 1972 and 1973 . After she won the Victor Català Prize in 1971 with the stories Molta roba i poc sabó ... i tan neta que la volen , she devoted herself full-time to literature. She began her career as a novelist with the works Ramona, adéu (1972) for which she received the Premi Sant Jordi de novella in 1976 and El temps de les cireres (1977)

Roig also made a career as a journalist. She had great success with her interviews, which were later published in the volumes Retrats paral lels (1975–1976). Another well-known work was Els catalans as camps nazis (1977) ( The Catalans in the Nazi camps ), for which she received the Crítica Serra d'Or Prize. From 1977 Roig worked as a journalist at Televisión Española , where she participated in the interview program Personatges .

With the novel L'hora violeta (1980) Roig reached her climax as a literary feminist author. From that moment on, her novels got a slightly different focus. She later published L'òpera quotidiana (1982), La veu melodiosa (1987) and the short stories El cant de la joventut (1989). She also wrote L'agulla daurada for which she received the National Prize for Catalan Literature in 1986. Her last work was Digues que m'estimes encara que sigui mentida (1991).

Between 1989 and 1990, Montserrat Roig was a member of the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana and Vice-President of the Junta Territorial del Principat de Catalunya . In 1991 she died of breast cancer in Barcelona and is buried in the Cementiri de Montjuïc .
