Diccionari Biogràfic de Dones

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diccionari Biogràfic de Dones ( DBD ), in its own spelling Diccionari biogràfic de dones , the biographical women's lexicon for the Catalan-speaking areas, is a biographical work in the Catalan language that presents and emphasizes the achievements of women for Catalan culture and society, past and present .

motivation

The achievements of women in the cultural and social history of the Catalan-speaking areas have remained consistently important from ancient times to the present day. For the most part, however, this commitment by women remained unrecognized or the work of many women did not receive the appreciation they needed.

The isolation and often only fragmented presentation of information about socially valuable work done by women or the practical invisibility of women in reference works such as encyclopedias and dictionaries acted as discouraging elements in research and with regard to the presentation of women's achievements in public and society.

Foundation of the platform

To counteract the loss of people in public memory who are recognized as having made an important contribution to the development of society or culture, the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia), the Consell de Mallorca (Government of Mallorca) and the Xarxa Vives d'Universitats (university network Xarxa Vives) launched the online lexicon Diccionari biogràfic de dones with public and free access. In 655 biographical articles, this lexicon offers a comprehensive overview of socially important work by women in the Catalan-speaking areas from the 1st to the 21st century AD. In this way, the project raises awareness of the participation and contributions of women in the development of Catalan society and culture. The elaboration of this lexicon was the responsibility of the Xarxa Vives researchers and university research groups in women's and gender research.
