Resident Evil 2 ( jap. バイオハザードRE: 2 , trans. Baiohazādo Āru ¤ TSU , Biohazard RE: 2; often Resident Evil 2 remake called) is a 2019 published computer game of Capcom . It is a complete remake of the game of the same name from 1998. Released on January 25, 2019 for Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 , the game is a survival horror game in the action-adventure genre with a third-person shooter - Elements.

Gameplay

In contrast to the original, the remake is played from the pursuer's perspective. At the beginning the player has the choice between two characters: Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield. Depending on the chosen character, some parts of the game are a little different. In addition, the game can be started in a so-called "B scenario" after it has been played through for the first time, which has further differences in the course of the game.

The player has to solve various puzzles in the course of the game. Various keys and objects have to be collected and sometimes combined or used in the right place in order to make progress. You are constantly pursued and threatened by various zombies , while only limited resources such as ammunition and medicines are available. As in the original game, saving is limited in the higher level of difficulty. Color ribbons can then be found in the game world, which can be used once for saving on a typewriter . Objects can be moved from the limited inventory to a chest, the contents of which can be accessed from different storage rooms.

When you have played through the two different scenarios, you also unlock the additional mode The 4th Survivor , in which you have to escape the sewer through the police station with the character Hunk . If you manage this challenge, you can also do the bonus mission The Tofu Survivor . The course is the same as in The 4th Survivor , with the difference that the game character is a man- sized chunk of tofu with only knives and a small number of medicinal plants at their disposal.

action

Entrance to the police station at Taipei Game Show 2019

The opening credits show a trucker driving a tanker at night while eating a hamburger . After he hits a figure with his vehicle, he stops his vehicle and gets out to see what he has detected with his vehicle. The figure lying on the street is a woman's corpse, who turns out to be a zombie and attacks the truck driver after he tries to examine her.

The actual game then begins with the prologue. The two player characters are each on their way to the fictional city of Raccoon City . Leon S. Kennedy to take up his post as a policeman at the local police station and Claire Redfield to look for her missing brother Chris, who was with the STARS special unit. The played character stops in front of the city at a gas station, which the player has to investigate. It turns out that there are zombies in it and when leaving the gas station, the game character meets the other character. Together they then flee from the zombies at the gas station and continue their way together in the car to Raccoon City.

Once in town, they drive to the police station, where the tanker truck from the intro hits at high speed and causes an accident. The two main characters are separated by burning vehicles and zombie hordes. Now the played character - surrounded by zombies - has to be navigated into the police station, whose gate is locked from the inside.

In the police station, which was set up in a former museum building, the player now has to find a secret way into an underground facility after talking to the police officer Marvin Branagh. In the underground, the two characters find a mutated scientist who acts as the first intermediate boss. While Claire Redfield meets the young girl Sherry Birkin, who is kidnapped in the underground car park by the police chief Irons, in Leon's scenario one meets the agent Ada Wong. She saves Leon's life and convinces him to help her get a virus sample from a secret underground laboratory of the Umbrella Corporation.

Both characters meet the so-called Tyrant in the police station, an overpowering mutant who follows the player through the entire building and cannot be defeated in battle.

In Claire's scenario, you play briefly as Sherry Birkin, who is being held in an orphanage by the police chief . Claire makes her way to the orphanage, where she and Sherry watch as Irons is killed by the further mutated scientist. Claire flees underground with Sherry, where they are attacked by the Tyrant, who is also killed by the mutant. The elevator in which Claire and Sherry are in crashes and Claire is woken up by the scientist Annette Birkin, who turns out to be Sherry's mother, after she is unconscious. Annette reveals to Claire that the mutated scientist is her husband, William.

In the Leon scenario, Ada Wong and the player break into the sewer together to get to Umbrella's underground base. When they arrive in the sewer they are attacked by Annette Birkin and Leon loses consciousness after being gunshot. The player then briefly plays Ada Wong in this scenario, who meets the Tyrant and is caught by Annette Birkin.

In both scenarios, the main characters make their way through the sewers. Meanwhile, you meet again the mutating William Birkin, who you have to push into the depths with an intermediate fight with a crane. Then you as Claire Redfield can free the sherry trapped by Annette in a garbage compactor, which shows the first signs of infection. Instead, as Leon, you free Ada. In any case, you then set out to take an inclined elevator down to Umbrella's secret laboratory.

In the Umbrella underground facility, the player now has to find a sample as Leon and the antidote for the G-Virus as Claire. After you have done this, however, you will be attacked by the now completely mutated William Birkin. After this boss fight, Annette faces William in Claire's scenario so that Claire can rush to Sherry with the antivirus. Leon, however, is warned by Annette that Ada is playing the wrong game and wants to sell the virus to the highest bidder. Ada is shot by Annette and falls down with the virus sample.

The secret base's self-destruct process begins and the player must leave the facility within a time limit. At the end of this passage you as Leon meet the Tyrant, who you have to defeat in a final boss fight, which finally succeeds with the help of the reappearing Ada Wong with a rocket launcher . Instead, as Claire, you fight the final battle with a minigun against the mutation of William Birkin, who reappears in this scenario as soon as you go down with the rescued sherry and a train.

After the final battle, the two main characters meet again in the evacuation train that brings Claire, Leon and Sherry from the Umbrella laboratory. On the train, in the B scenario, you are attacked one last time by what was once William Birkin. However, you can save yourself by uncoupling the rear wagon, which is being devoured by the mutant. The monster remains in the exploding laboratory and the three characters escape to the surface, ending the game.

Development history

Police vehicle at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018

The original Resident Evil 2 was released for PlayStation in 1998.

In August 2015, the remake was announced as a completely new development from Capcom Japan. At the same time, a fan remake called Resident Evil 2: Reborn was discontinued. The discontinuation of the fan project, which should also offer a third-person perspective, was done at the request of Capcom. As part of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018, the remake was finally unveiled with a trailer at Sony's press conference. January 25, 2019 was specified as the release date.

Before the game was released, a demo was released on January 11, 2019. In the so-called one-shot demo, the player can explore part of the police station with a limit of 30 minutes. Any further play after the 30 minutes have elapsed will be blocked.

On January 25, the game finally appeared for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The graphics engine was already for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard used RE engine used.

The faces of some game characters were created based on scans of real people. Leon S. Kennedy is based on the model Eduard Badaluta, Claire Redfield on the model Jordan McEwen and Marvin Branagh on the music producer Patrick Levar.

According to Zeit Online , around 800 developers worked on the game for over three years.

synchronization

Although the two English-speaking voice actors of the main characters of the original game were originally contacted for the remake, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield were cast with new actors in the English version. The company commissioned for the localization is said to have deliberately renounced members of the US American union SAG-AFTRA or its Canadian counterpart ACTRA.

Resident Evil 2 from 2019 received extremely good reviews. It has been hailed as a successful remake and model example by many game magazines. It is not just a simple HD remaster with only graphical improvements, but an all-round reinterpretation that has been fundamentally modernized and equipped with a contemporary third-person perspective.

In the test of the German game magazine GameStar , the title was praised all around and described as one of the best parts of the Resident Evil series. Only the well-staged, but playfully rather shallow boss fights are criticized. The technology was also exceptionally well done , apart from minor weaknesses in anti-aliasing and surface reflection.

"Capcom is reviving Resident Evil 2 after 21 years and is a direct hit in the horror genre."

- Michael Herold, Dennis Michel : GameStar

The author of the PC Games test report describes the Resident Evil 2 remake as the "perfect balance between old-school gameplay and today's demands". According to him, the game transports the strengths and charm of the original and does not shy away from necessary modernizations.

“This is what remakes should look like! A worthy new edition of the classic. "

- Christian Dörre : PC Games

The online edition of Die Zeit notes the great effort in producing the game, especially for a remake, and notes many modernizations compared to the model, such as the shoulder perspective. Despite the changes, Capcom managed to keep the original. The standard speaks of fan service at the highest level. Resident Evil 2 is also a joy for beginners with its "timelessly solid gameplay". However, the plot shows its age, which, according to the author, is due to the increased demands on the medium of computer games. Modern titles of the genre like The Last of Us and Alien: Isolation would have much more to offer in terms of dialogues and characters. Spiegel Online praises that in Resident Evil 2, in contrast to Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey, everything runs on a small scale, while many games are getting bigger and bigger. Instead of an endless number of paths, there is usually only one.

"The classic horror game" Resident Evil 2 "was released 21 years ago. A remake should now appeal to nostalgics and newcomers. That works - because the game rewards slow, thoughtful approaches. "

- Matthias Kreienbrink : Spiegel Online

Awards and sales success

At the Game Critics Awards 2018, the game was recognized as the best game in the Electronic Entertainment Expo in the Best of Show category even before it was released .

According to Capcom, four million copies of the game are said to have been delivered to retailers just one month after the release. According to Steam Spy , the game will have sold more than a million times on the Steam distribution platform by March 2019, which, according to PC Games , is more than Resident Evil 7 . By September 2019, the game had already sold 4.7 million times.
