Peter Herz (born January 18, 1895 in Vienna , † March 7, 1987 ibid) was an Austrian writer , librettist and columnist .

Peter Herz studied at the Academy for Music in Vienna and then entered professional life as a bank clerk. In 1923 he founded the amateur stage of the young Viennese literary club and worked for cabaret ( Hell , Rolandbühne ) and theater ( comedy theater in the Prater ). As a librettist he wrote texts for operettas by Leo Ascher , Edmund Eysler , Leo Fall , Bernard Grün , Bruno Granichstaedten and Franz Lehár . Together with Egon Neumann , he created the first Viennese operetta revues from 1932 ( Jolly Joker ). In 1930 his text In der Theateragentur was one of the first Austrian sound films to be filmed with the music of Frank Fox .

Herz was also responsible for many hit lyrics. Because of his Jewish origins, he had to emigrate to London via Zurich and Paris in 1938 . There he was interned on the Isle of Man , where he founded the barbed wire cabaret. After his release in 1940, he re-founded it in 1941 as the German-speaking cabaret Blue Danube Club in London. He himself worked there as artistic director and emcee . From 1945 he also worked as a columnist and foreign correspondent for the Austrian newspapers Neues Österreich , Die Presse and Weltpresse .

In 1953 he closed the Blue Danube Club and returned to Vienna. There he wrote for feature articles for newspapers, film scripts, radio plays and radio programs, he also published the novel It's Not Easy in 1962 and his memoirs in 1985. Yesterday was a beautiful day . For a long time he was a member of the board of directors of AKM and Austro-Mechana .

After his death in 1987, the Jewish Museum Vienna inherited his 26 archive boxes. In 1992 it was given to the Vienna Library in the City Hall, initially on permanent loan , and in 2006 finally also the property rights.

His grave is on the Döblinger Friedhof (Gr. 14, R. 1, No. 8) in Vienna.
